Abstract
Carcinoid tumors, producing biogenic amines and various polypeptides, arise from the diffuse peripheral endocrine system. They are most frequently localized in different parts of the gastrointestinal tract and less frequently in bronchi, biliary
tract
and ovaries.
Carcinoid tumors of theovary are classified into two categories: primary and metastatic. The primary carcinoid tumors are classified as follows: insular or islet carcinoid(carcinoid tumors of the midgut type); trabecular carcinoid (carcinoid
tumors
of
the foregut or hindgut type); struma carcinoid (struma ovarii and carcinoid or carcinoid tumor combined with thyroid tissue).
Primary trabecular carcicnoid of the ovary is an uncommon ovarian tumor, behaving like a tumor of low malignant potential.
In the younger patient the treatment the treatment is unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, while in the postmenopausal patient bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy and hysterectomy is the treatment of choice. Long term follow up is advisable.
Authors have experienced a case of primary trabecular carcinoid tumor in mature ovarian teratoma and reported with a brief literature review.
